4 Qualities of a Good Math Tutor

Qualities of a Good Math TutorNo matter what type of math tutor you choose for your child, the extra attention your child receives in tutoring sessions or enrichment classes can be beneficial. That attention can boost the child’s confidence, customize learning goals, and expand your child’s education opportunities through enrichment.

Because there are so many options for tutoring, you can narrow down your search for a good math tutor by looking for these common characteristics.

Characteristics of a Good Math Tutor

1) Consistent Appointments

Your tutor should set a consistent time and place to meet for tutoring, and you and your tutor should have an agreement on what to do if one of you is not able to make it to an appointment. For example, tutors should provide you with make-up opportunities. That way your child does not go without a lesson that may be critical to his or her success, especially during important testing or end-of-year project periods when students can use an extra boost.

2) Daily Maintenance

It’s likely that you will not be able to meet with your tutor every day of the week, so your tutor should provide some homework to keep your child’s mind active between tutoring sessions.

3) Setting Goals

There are a few educational goals that your tutor should be able to help your child with including critical thinking, study habits, and preparing for tests. Set those goals with the tutor and revisit them regularly to adjust the goals to the child’s progress.

4) Well-Trained

Your math tutor should have a good understanding of the topic in which he or she is going to tutor your child. Not all tutors receive training unless they also belong to an enrichment program or company such as A Grade Ahead.

Find a Local Math Tutor

Along with individuals and teachers who offer tutoring opportunities, there are several companies that offer tutoring and enrichment. If you’re looking for which local tutor is the best for your child, then you may want to look into companies that offer tutoring outside of regular school hours.

These companies do differ regarding your commitment of time and money, lesson-based instruction, and curriculum-based homework for students. Here are a few other factors you might want to consider when picking the best one for you:

With a tutoring or enrichment company, you can choose a program that fits your schedule and price range, without worrying about the inconsistencies and distractions that can happen with one-to-one tutoring at home.

Since not all tutors will provide the same experience, it’s important to figure out what you’re looking for and do research on what will work best for you and your child. Although a one-to-one tutor may be what you look for initially, you may find that small group tutoring will work best to help your child reach goals with consistent classes and homework materials.

  1. Flexibility is key, too, since addressing multiple intelligences takes time, and lots of creative energy.
