Spring Poetry Prompts

Get creative this spring and poetry month with these prompts. Younger students may have more success with the simpler prompts (haiku, rhyming, and acrostic), but all prompts are suitable for poets of any age! And don’t worry if your child is unable to write independently; have them tell you their response verbally and write it for them if you wish. Most of all, have fun!

Fill in the Blanks! Create a spring poem blueprint and have your child fill it in with appropriate rhyming words. Here is an example:

I walk under the blue sky,

I tell all the flowers _____ (one answer could be “Hi”).

I hear birds chirping so sweet,

Springtime is really so _____ (one answer could be “neat”).

Write a spring acrostic! An acrostic is a poem in which the first letters of the lines spell a word, and the word is also the topic of the poem. Example:

Sunny, warm days

Playing outside for hours

Running around with my friends

I love this time of year!

Never want to

Go inside!

Write a haiku about spring! A haiku is a 3-lined poem about nature that follows a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. This style of poem is great for younger students because it is short, simple, and helps them to begin recognizing and practicing syllables. Here is an example:

Beautiful spring day

I smell flowers and hear birds

Blue sky and green grass

Did you know that A Grade Ahead offers programs for children in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade?

Write a spring limerick! A limerick is a humorous, 5-lined poem with a distinct rhythm that follows an AABBA rhyme scheme. Here is one:

Spring is the best time of year,

I’m happy each time that it’s here!

You might look for me

At the top of a tree,

But when it’s gone I’ll shed a tear!

A Grade Ahead may be the perfect fit for your elementary school student. We offer programs for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students!

Write a free verse poem about spring! A free verse poem can be any length and have any rhythm or rhyme scheme (or no rhythm or rhyme at all). While it has the fewest rules, it leaves the most room for creativity! Here is one example:

Bare feet on soft green

Feel a tickle from new growth.

Bending down to smell honeysuckle so sweet,

A drop of heaven on my tongue.

A Grade Ahead does not forget about our older students, offering programs for those in 7th grade, 8th grade, and high school!

What do you think? Is your child interested in creative writing or poetry? Which prompt are you excited to dive into? We would love to hear from you or see your creations in the comments!
