A Grade Ahead Educational Adventures: COSI

At A Grade Ahead we provide superior academic enrichment for our students. Time spent in our classrooms is vital to academic growth. While classroom time is important, time spent outside the classroom can also be a great learning opportunity. We know that learning happens everywhere. Our headquarters in Central Ohio is surrounded by endless opportunities for educational field trips. Join us by reading this article where we explore COSI: The Center of Science and Industry.

Since 1964, COSI Columbus has been providing visitors with opportunities for hands-on learning. Focusing on science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM), COSI offers 320,000 square feet of interactive fun for all ages. From the dinosaur gallery to space exploration and the planetarium, COSI exhibits run the gamut. Complete with classic exhibits and traveling exhibits, COSI is a great place to learn all year round.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITS

Starting on November 2nd, 2024, COSI guests can experience T. rex: The Ultimate Predator. Organized by the American Museum of Natural History, this exhibit features a life-size representation of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. You will learn everything you have ever wanted to know about this cretaceous creature. If this sounds a little too intense for younger kiddos, families can head to the traveling PAW Patrol exhibit. Open through January 12, 2025, this fun-filled experience is perfect for preschoolers and their parents.

GADGETS

Do you want to encourage your children to become great problem solvers? COSI’s Gadgets exhibit is the perfect place to do just that. Gadgets features multiple hands-on activities that teach guests about physical principles and properties. Kids will be excited to learn about simple machines like pulleys, levers, and gears. There is even a laboratory where kids and parents can become scientists by conducting self-led experiments.

LIFE

If your child is thinking about becoming a doctor, they will love the LIFE exhibit. While this area is best suited for older kids, it is a great place to allow curious minds to explore serious topics. From the growing embryo display to the sound chamber that absorbs echoes, LIFE dives deep into the human experience.

OCEAN

Head from life science to environmental science as you step into the Ocean. This exhibit teaches guests about the Earth’s greatest resource. Kids will learn how waves are made, how water is sticky, and how submarines work. Through fun and play, Ocean draws attention to a vast yet vulnerable part of our world. COSI does a great job of highlighting big ideas for growing minds.

PROGRESS

One of my personal favorite COSI exhibits is Progress. As you step through the entrance, you are transported to a street in 1890s America. Kids can explore and learn about morse code, the phonograph, the advent of food canning, and the origins of photography. At the end of the street, guests walk through a tunnel leading to the same street in 1960s America. Kids and parents can play with rotary phones, use a juke box, sit at the diner, and watch themselves on TV! This exhibit is a super fun and engaging way to learn about progress in American society.
